Stephen Shoop

Highland Melody

Highland Melody

Highland Melody is an original tuba solo by Stephen Shoop.  Piano accompaniment was composed by Robert Brazier, from Ennis, Texas.  Both Shoop and Brazier hold music education degrees from the University of North Texas.

The solo is reminiscent of a Scottish folk song melody.  Style is "legato."  The key is largely Bb pentatonic and includes the characteristic Scotch "snap."  The melody is played an octave higher on the final time through, requiring confident playing in the upper register of the instrument.

The piece fosters melodic playing in intermediate-level tuba players.  The work was added to the Texas Prescribed Music List (PML) as a Class II tuba solo, in 2011.
