Band 101:  Understanding The People Skills Side of Band Directing is a collection of thirty-plus short essays-- about two pages each in length.  The subject matter of each topic focuses on the people skills involved in school bands and band directing.  Common themes involve human nature issues- including how to develop necessary people skills, group interaction, understanding the perspective of others, working with students, parents, administrators, and community, and the predictability of issues and situations.

Essays not only present real life issues commonly encountered by band directors, but also offer suggestions for resolution. Most are drawn from real-life situations encountered during the course of the author's twenty-seven year teaching career.

Many inexperienced band directors quit during their first few years of teaching because they fail to understand the people skills necessary to succeed in the profession.  Therefore, the purpose of this resource is to provide insightful information needed in addressing these matters.  The book may be used to supplement textbooks for a band methods and materials course.  Or, it may be utilized in the form of supplemental reading.  The book might be of special interest to novice directors who have been in the profession a short time and recognize the need for skill development in this area.
